The National Rugby League operates at a scale that most people don't see beyond the game. Behind every accredited coach, registered official, and certified administrator is a learning and compliance requirement that the organisation is obligated to meet. As the NRL grew, the infrastructure managing that learning didn't grow with it — and the gaps were starting to show.

The situation on the ground

Attendance was tracked on spreadsheets. Certifications were issued manually and filed in ways that made audit preparation a significant undertaking. Enrollment required back-and-forth between staff and participants across email and phone — a process that created delays and errors in equal measure.

What we built — and how we built it

SST Cloud designed and delivered a purpose-built Learning Management System that unified digital and in-person learning within a single, coherent platform. We started by mapping the NRL's actual workflows — not the ideal-state versions, but the real day-to-day processes — and built around those.

The platform supports SCORM-compliant online courses alongside structured face-to-face session management, with both streams feeding into the same reporting and compliance layer. Enrollment is automated. Progress is tracked in real time. Certifications are issued without manual intervention once a learner completes the required pathway.

Role-based dashboards give administrators, tutors, and learners a tailored experience. Admins see the full picture — enrollments, completion rates, outstanding certifications, upcoming sessions. The technical foundation

The stack was chosen for longevity and performance. Next.js on the frontend delivers a fast, responsive interface across devices — important for learners who may be accessing content in the field, not just at a desk. NestJS handles the backend API architecture, AWS S3 manages SCORM content delivery at scale, and PostgreSQL underpins the analytics and reporting layer.

The system was deployed on cloud infrastructure managed by SST Cloud, removing the burden of technical maintenance from the NRL's internal team entirely. Updates, monitoring, and support are handled on an ongoing basis — so the platform improves over time without requiring the client to manage it.
